Frequently Asking Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a living seawall?

A living seawall is a protective structure that also supports marine ecosystems. Ours includes 3D-printed panels with sculpted surfaces that encourage marine life to settle and grow.

What do you mean by “vertical reef”?

In canals where horizontal restoration (like oyster beds) isn’t possible, we build upward. The seawall’s vertical face becomes habitat—like a reef standing on end.

How does it improve water quality?

Oysters attached to the wall can filter out pollutants, while clearer water encourages the return of seagrass which absorb nutrients, stabilize sediment, and serve as food and habitat for other marine organisms.

When will construction begin?

Installation begins in May 2026, with the Discovery Deck opening to the public by February 2027.

Is this a Church-only project?

No. While the Church by the Sea initiated and hosts the project, the Living Seawall is a nonprofit initiative open to scientists, donors, and supporters of all backgrounds.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. The Church by the Sea is a registered 501(c)(3). EIN: 59-0766970.
